Shad was our team’s 2014 competition robot, designed and built to compete in FIRST Robotics Competition game Aerial Assist. Shad, lovingly named after a Crab Shack employee, has a three-wheel holonomic (or Kiwi) drive. The drive allows quick omni-directional movement across the field; what it lacks in pushing power it makes up for in speed, allowing for quick collection and score cycles.
Shad’s collector and shooter ran off the same mechanism. One side of its arm served as the collector, using omni wheel rollers to pull the ball in when angled down 45 degrees. On the other side of the arm were the two shooter wheels, which would launch the ball like a pitching machine.
